There is a problem here.

I understand the need to have a group that manages the computer systems and ensures updates are applied but…

Have you ever noticed that they tend to get out of hand and instead of focusing on building a good solid infrastructure in the workplace they waste their time….

  • Monitoring you and making sure you didn’t spend 5 minutes on Facebook
  • Making ridiculous Proxy rules that not only block you out of sites like Facebook like they were meant to but also sites that assist you in your job
  • Talking by the water cooler joyously about how they caught someone on a website and got them in trouble
  • Not being able to be found when trying to get a known system issue addressed
  • LAN parties in that cavern they call the IT room
  • Respond sarcastically to questions

Ok so we do need them because someone needs to keep the systems running but somehow a way needs to be devised to get them to do that but also avoid all the “I got some power” crap that makes them annoying at the same time.

Perhaps all IT should be outsourced to another company that specializes in system admin.

Being outsourced they won’t get that whole “I’m powerful” mentality because they’ll just want to please the client to keep the contract

Now I must admit the IT group at my current employment is pretty good at not being like the things I have listed and for being 2 people they do get the job done but there was a time long long ago when we had an IT manager that was all of those things.

Thankfully he was shown the door.

  1. If outsourced, an IT support supplier would probably be responsible for IT support at more than a single institution. How would that remove the “I’m powerful” mentality?

  2. They are providing a paid service outlined by their client. They want to please the client and not be jerks.

This is all just theory of course, knowing myself my attitudes and the other attitudes of admins towards others I know it is truly unavoidable because we’re all bastards…. but everything sounds good on paper.

  4. I apologise, but, in my opinion, you are not right. Let’s discuss. Write to me in PM, we will talk.
